Men’s Health & Other Urology
Prof PS has experience in a wide range of urological issues, but the most common ailments he treats are below.
Waterworks symptoms (urinary issues)
Usually, this is a result of an enlarged prostate in an older man (referred to as benign prostatic enlargement, or BPE), or an inflamed prostate in a younger man. Tests and operations required for these cases include bipolar resection of the prostate, Aquablation, and robotic simple prostatectomy.
Phimosis (tight foreskin)
Phimosis is the inability to retract the foreskin (or discomfort doing so). Prof PS attempts treatment without surgery, but frenuloplasty and circumcision can be performed if necessary.
Haematuria (blood in urine)
Haematuria often requires a few non-invasive tests, and in many cases, a cystoscopy to observe the bladder directly. This can be done within a week of an appointment with Prof PS.
Hydrocoele
Hydrocoele is a swelling around the testes. This is best diagnosed by a physical examination and an ultrasound. It may require a small day-case operation, which can usually be done within a week of your initial appointment.
Erectile dysfunction (and men’s health)
This category covers a range of sexual dysfunctions (such as premature ejaculation) that can often be treated with medications. It is important to note that erection issues in men of middle-age or older can be linked to heart problems. Therefore, a thorough holistic assessment for obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, and pre-diabetes is essential. This covers risk factors for heart attacks and strokes.Â
Prof PS works with expert cardiologists, endocrinologists, and GPs, to whom patients are referred if these assessments come back positive. This is all part of the Men’s Health MOT, which men over 40 are advised to undergo.
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
While more common in women, UTIs occur often in men with prostate problems. Typically, they can be diagnosed, investigated, and treated with medication and lifestyle changes.
Other urology
Urology covers the entire urinary tract. This includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra (as well as the prostate and seminal vesicles in men). While Prof PS covers a wide range of urological issues, there are some areas where he defers to other accomplished urologists.
If, after an initial consultation, Prof PS believes another doctor can offer more suitable care, he will use his extensive network of esteemed doctors to find the right person to look after you.
